Conference Theme
This year’s conference theme is “Reflect, Respond, Reimagine: Incorporating Hip-Hop Culture in Education.” The theme is focused on exploring the history and culture of hip-hop and its relevance in education today. Reflecting on the culture of hip-hop means examining its history and identifying lessons that can be applied to current educational practices. It also means looking within ourselves to question our readiness for the authentic incorporation of hip-hop across educational spaces. Responding to the needs of youth and communities requires an understanding of their experiences and offering strategies that are anchored in youth culture to support academic achievement, social-emotional wellness, and post-secondary pursuits. It also means centering their experiences in our practice as hip-hop educators. Reimagining the future of education with the incorporation of hip-hop involves exploring innovative approaches and practices to ensure that hip-hop remains a relevant and effective tool for education. This includes leveraging the creative elements and sensibilities of hip-hop, such as MC, DJ, Breakdance, Graffiti, and Knowledge of Self, across educational and community spaces.
